Distinctive Unit Insignia


Description/Blazon
A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in height overall consisting of two blue wings conjoined below a red chevron bearing a gold chevron engrailed, surmounted by a blue arrowhead.

Symbolism
Ultramarine blue is one of the traditional colors used for Aviation.  The red and yellow (the color elements of from the Vietnamese flag) refer to Vietnam and to the 123d Aviation Battalion's place of activation.  The blue wings together with the red chevron symbolize aerial support and the yellow engrailed chevron refers to the broad range of support activities performed by the organization.

Background
The distinctive unit insignia was originally approved for the 123d Aviation Battalion on 22 July 1968.  It was amended to clarify the description and symbolism of the design on 23 October 1987.  The insignia was redesignated for the 123d Aviation Regiment on 23 October 1987.

Gules on a chevron engrailed Or a chevron Azure; on a chief of the second two wings conjoined of the third.

Crest

On a wreath of the colors Or and Gules between two sprigs of bamboo leaves, an annulet of five bamboo sections with two swords in saltire points up interlaced all Proper, at center an equilateral triangle one point up charged with five vertical bars, one Gules at center between two Or and two Vert.

Symbolism

Shield

Blue is one of the colors used for Aviation.  Red and yellow, the color of the flag of Vietnam, refer to Vietnam and to the 123d Aviation Battalion's place of activation.  The blue wings, together with the blue chevron symbolize aerial support and the yellow engrailed chevron refers to the broad range of support activities within the scope of the organization.

Crest

The triangle shape, alluding to the Mekong River Delta, and the bars of red, yellow and green refer to the 123d Aviation Battalion's campaign participation; red and yellow also represent Vietnamese unit decorations.  The crossed swords represent the combat mission of the 123 Aviation Battalion, while the bamboo symbolizes strength and durability and is an integral part of Southeast Asian life.

Background
The coat of arms was originally approved for the 123d Aviation Battalion on 20 March 1968.  It was amended to add a crest and clarify the symbolism of the design on 7 April 1986.  The insignia was redesignated for the 123d Aviation Regiment with the symbolism revised on 23 October 1987.
